About this cause

Vision Care for Homeless People is a charity which provides eye care services to homeless and other vulnerable people in an accessible and friendly environment, where they can feel both safe and welcome. Our branch in Exeter is the newest addition to a group of VCHP clinics in the country. Homelessness is an issue which is very close to the heart of Exeter, with recent figures reporting Exeter with one of the highest rates of rough sleepers in the UK. Through the work of our volunteers, we aim to preserve, protect and promote the ocular health of people who are homeless, who are unable to access mainstream services available through the NHS. For some, it is simply a case of providing glasses to help them to see better, but for others we can detect serious pathology which needs treatment.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Homelessness does not only affect those who are homeless, but also the citizens in their community who see them living rough on the street. Poor vision is a substantial barrier to many aspects of life. Providing this service will enable patients to read their job applications and housing documents and improve their quality of life. We hope this will help break the vicious cycle of homelessness.
