About this cause

Voluntary Action Shetland (VAS) is Shetland's Third Sector Interface. VAS's key objectives are to support the growth, capacity and development of the third sector in Shetland. The Shetland Befriending Scheme sits underneath the umbrella of VAS and provides 1:1 voluntary support to individuals in the Shetland community who feel they need the support, to enable them to be all that they can be. The befriending support enables an individual to engage in their own local community in a positive way to help increase their sense of self worth, increase confidence and self esteem, and to help reduce feelings of loneliness and social isolation. Qualitative activities are undertaking to help the service user develop or sustain their skills to be able to be more or sustain their independence.

How this cause brings people in the community together

We will help by developing/enhancing peoples skills by volunteering for the scheme. They will be provided with initial training followed by hands on experience. We can then provide a reference for any volunteer who is keen to further their employment. Also we would be supporting those with dementia to continue to have a positive connection with their community, engaging in purposeful activity.
