About this cause

Home-Start Aberdeen provides around 220 local families, including 360 children, with up to 27,500 hours of support each year. This support is provided by trained home visiting volunteers, who spend 2-3 hours per week with a local family, providing them with emotional and practical support in their own home environment. Families – who are mainly referred to Home-Start via health visitors and social workers – may be facing a variety of challenges. These include, but are not restricted to, ill health, disability, domestic violence or substance misuse. From 1 September 2017, Home-Start Aberdeen will deliver a new Big Hopes Big Future project, which aims to support parents to help their children start school with the social, emotional, language and daily livings skills they need to do well.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Big Hopes Big Future is a tested and proven approach - already in use in England - to help parents create a positive home learning environment for their children. The Scottish Attainment Challenge launched in 2015 prioritises closing the attainment gap to achieve equity in educational outcomes. Big Hopes Big Future is an important - and forward-thinking - part of the solution within our community.
