Derbyshire Asbestos Support Team
Health
We want to print more booklets that will raise awareness of the ongoing dangers of asbestos in domestic properties.
About this cause
DAST began in 2002. We were originally set up as a local support group, but we now cover all of the East Midlands. We provide help to anyone that has been diagnosed with an asbestos related disease. Many are suffering from Mesothelioma, which is an aggressive cancer with no known cure. We deal with between 200 and 250 new cases each year. Our services include the following: Visiting those newly-diagnosed in their own homes to advise on financial entitlements and assisting with benefit and government compensation claims. Meetings, conferences and other events to provide information and opportunities for mutual support. Bereavement support for loved ones and carers. Producing materials and events to raise awareness of the ongoing dangers of asbestos, and the associated diseases.
How this cause brings people in the community together
We want everyone to consider asbestos when they are doing DIY and household management tasks. The more people that do this, then hopefully the lower the rate of Mesothelioma diagnosis in the future. As the incubation period can be anything from 10 to 40 years then there is not an immediate effect, except in the increase of knowledge which will be passed on within families and friendship groups.
