We want to help improve speech, language and communication skills for children with Down syndrome in the local community.
About this cause
Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association is committed to improving the lives of children with Down syndrome by providing friendship, advice and a range of specialist and progressive educational services from birth, which they wouldn’t otherwise receive. These activities include Baby Support Groups, Early Intervention Groups for pre-school children, Communication and Drama Therapy, and our School Advisory Service supporting the successful inclusion of children in over 60 mainstream schools and nurseries. We also provide valuable social opportunities. Through our activities, we help enable children to develop the vital skills they need to succeed, be educated alongside their peers in mainstream school, and become valued and productive members of society.
How this cause brings people in the community together
When children with DS are given opportunities to participate, the whole community benefits. Good communication skills mean that children with DS can be more fully included into society. They are better able to express their thoughts and aspirations, and will be offered more opportunities by society in return, making them valued and productive members of their home and school communities.
