About this cause
Myaware supports people affected by the rare, neurological muscle weakness condition called myasthenia which can affect anyone, at any age. It is a life long, life changing and often debilitating disease. Myasthenia can impact individuals in widely varying ways - from mild weaknesses to fluctuating weaknesses that cause severe difficulties with sight, speech, swallowing, movement and breathing, and can prove fatal if not treated. Most GPs have never seen the condition and once diagnosed and on medication most patients see their consultant once each year and so self manage the illness 99% of the time. To do this well they need information and knowledge, and myaware provides this through literature, website, Education Days, specialist nurses, local support groups and a local contact.
How this cause brings people in the community together
It will educate medical professionals about a rare illness. It will educate sufferers about their condition helping them to manage it better with less demand on local health care. It will educate and provide support for carers of people with myasthenia. It will strengthen the bond amongst the community of myasthenia sufferers who will get to know each other and build their own support networks.
