We want to run a maths class for disadvantaged children who need a bit of extra help with their schoolwork.
About this cause
CLASSS has provided evening supplementary education classes, based on small-group tuition, to primary and secondary school age children in need of extra help with their schoolwork since 2008 (and dating back to the 1980s through our predecessor CHALCS). We started in response to a survey of headteachers that uncovered a need for our service. Relying on word-of-mouth, demand for our service continues to grow, with 45 children currently registered, but rising (we operate a waiting list). Pupils are taught by volunteers, apart from secondary school pupils, who are supported by professional tutors in English and Maths. Our work brings together children from diverse and disadvantaged communities. Almost all children have below average attainment, placing them at higher risk of becoming NEET.
How this cause brings people in the community together
Improving the life chances and aspirations of children is a great way to serve the community. We are within reach of deprived neighbourhoods, which we predominantly serve, though our diversity is our strength & our pupils come from 20 different schools. Our work brings together children from diverse communities who otherwise may not be able to afford classes without our’s being heavily subsidised.
