Caithness Stroke Group
Social Inclusion
We need to pay for travel, refreshments and hall hire to improve the quality of life for people in Caithness affected by stroke illness.
About this cause
Caithness Stroke Group is run by a team of 12 volunteers(including a driver). We meet weekly in a local venue 6 miles from Thurso, Caithness. Our aim is to improve the quality of life for people in Caithness affected by stroke illness. A specifically adapted bus transports our members to the group where they can participate and enjoy social activities, and be supported in their use of communication strategies. For some who attend, it is perhaps, the only social setting outwith their local authority care home. In the morning we go upstairs to play indoor bowls - the venue has a lift which is ideal for wheelchair users and those with mobility issues. In the afternoon we play dominoes, games on the Wii computer and have quizzes and arts & crafts, followed by afternoon tea and cake.
How this cause brings people in the community together
At present, we are the only group in Caithness who is providing this type of service. Suffering a stroke can be extremely isolating as power of speech and mobility can be affected. We aim to provide a welcoming and stimulating environment, to help people reintegrate back into family, social and community life, encourage access to other facilities, and reduce social isolation.
