About this cause

Disability Shetland delivers a range of group activities, clubs and individual programmes for clients with additional support needs throughout the urban, rural and island areas of Shetland. Our service is aimed at young people and adults with physical and/or learning disabilities. Our aim is to help our users to develop a range of personal and social skills which will enable them to realise their potential and participate fully in the activities of their communities. Programmes contain a wide and diverse menu of activities, including physical exercise, indoor and outdoor sports and games, arts and crafts activities, dance sessions, swimming, boat trips and excursions to parks, beaches and places of local interest.

How this cause brings people in the community together

We hope there will be a significant and measurable difference to the participants in all three of the groups. As well as the improvement in personal skills, we want to give participants the opportunity to develop their social abilities and thus enable the creation of relationships, which will decrease their isolation, loneliness and make it less likely that they will be subject to discrimination.
