About this cause

Canopy transforms empty and derelict properties into secure, decent and affordable homes for those in housing need. Through our 'self-help' program we also provide training to volunteers to help them on their way to employment. In 2016 Canopy housed 30 people in 13 properties and overall, has now refurbished and manages a total of 68 homes and 3 community buildings in the Beeston, Burley and Harehills, neighborhoods in the bottom 10% of the index of overall deprivation (UK). Our ‘Self- Help’ program has been replicated by over 100 charities and we were awarded the United Nations World Habitat Award last year for innovation and sustainability in housing. Objectives: relief of people in housing and employment need, especially young people, through the renovation of property.

How this cause brings people in the community together

We bring derelict property back into use and house homeless families. We currently house 200 previously homeless people in 68 properties We support self-helpers through their journey from homelessness to independence by helping to train unemployed people in construction skills, we create jobs, improve community cohesion and contribute to the regeneration of disadvantaged neighborhoods.
