About this cause

Galloway Forest Astronomical Society (GFAS) is a Scottish charity to promote knowledge and understanding of astronomy in communities around the Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park (DSP). Based in Newton Stewart at the south-west corner of the DSP, GFAS works with its members to assist local people, visitors and especially young people to gain practical experience of land-based astronomy and knowledge of the place of the Earth in the Solar system and the wider universe. We hold regular observation meetings in the winter in and around Newton Stewart, maintain a website and publish an email newsletter six times a year. Our services are offered free or at cost to all participants and we offer a free subscription to junior members. We are affiliated to the Federation of Astronomical Societies.

How this cause brings people in the community together

The site is good for night sky observation and we can use the tennis pavilion for meetings and respite facilities for participants during evening sessions in the winter. The site is wheelchair-accessible and will let us work with disadvantaged clients. The move also lets us complete our long-term plan to build a planetarium for meetings with school students and enhances tourism access to DSP.
