About this cause

We support isolated disabled people, who have learning disabilities, by providing meetings, workshops and social events at weekends and evenings each month. Our members have limited social networks and so find that getting out and about improves their quality of life. This provides carers and family with respite from support tasks. All of them though disabled cannot access local govt. support. Some receive PIP, but all are on low incomes. An objective is to develop individual self-reliance, so we have members on our management committee and working on a 1:1 basis on personal support. As a result we have a member who has researched and become an organ donor, a member led spoken word workshop and individuals working on mindfulness.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Our members are isolated or have limited social networks leading to some developing mental health problems. Care homes and agencies provide support to others, who cannot be without support. Members problems have the potential to escalate if unchecked and our service eases that process this would lead to accessing more resources.
