About this cause

Parkside is based in Aldershot & provides support services for children & adults with learning disabilities living in the local area. It was founded in 1963 by a group of parents who realised that the support for families who had children with special needs was limited. The premises next to the park on Guildford Road were built and the first playgroup was started (affectionately known as the Peter Pan Club). Our aim is to give both children & adults the opportunity to develop their individual skills & take part in activities within the local community. Needs can vary from support to socialise with friends, to participating in leisure activities, meeting new people, developing life skills, work experience opportunities & providing respite for family members.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Many people with a learning disability will have never encountered a public facing situation which requires them to really challenge people’s perception. We have found since opening our cafes that many people in our community have a better understanding of people with a learning disability & we are able to dispel myths that have confused people. These opportunities really give our clients belief.
