Avalon Camps
Young People
We want to buy new tents to allow disadvantaged kids to enjoy a week's camping.
About this cause
Avalon Camps is a local not-for-profit organisation based in Somerset. Our objectives are to give a free holiday in the countryside to disadvantaged children from Bristol, between the ages of 7 and 10. Working with local schools the children are recommended by their teachers and / or their care and welfare officers. The camps are designed to give them the chance to learn, play and sleep in the great outdoors, visit local farms and take part in new activities. The Camps allows each child to have a week’s respite from conditions at home. We hold two camps every year. These are each six days long with 32 children attending each camp. It takes around 150 volunteers to make the camps happen. The camps cost about £8,000 a year and are funded entirely through donations and fundraising.
How this cause brings people in the community together
We allow each child to have a week’s respite from conditions at home. Many have never before left Bristol. Volunteering as a Young Leader on Avalon Camps is priceless when it comes to personal development. Helping out gives people the opportunity to meet others in the local community. Of course, the main benefit is knowing that no matter how small a part you play, you really make a difference.
