About this cause
Our group has brought back into use a local paddling pool which was closed by the council in 2013 and opened by Lee Gardens Pool Committee in 2016. We are an intergenerational group of volunteers from under 7 years of age to over 75 years of age. We work closely with public and private organisations. Volunteers meet weekly throughout the year to maintain and develop the pool and its grounds. The culmination of our work is when the pool opens during the month of August for children, families, elderly and lonely people. Penrhiwceiber is a Communities First area which means it is recognized as a place where poverty is prevalent. Our group works towards poverty alleviation and building community cohesion. Community support for our project is overwhelming as local people take ownership of it.
How this cause brings people in the community together
Our project has brought back into use a community resources that had falling into a terrible state of disrepair. Volunteers work at Lee Gardens Pool every week to maintain the grounds and its flower beds. Community support in relation to fundraising and volunteering is amazing! The project is bringing people out of their homes and there is a much greater feeling of community cohesion and belonging
