About this cause

The Island is a registered charity operating since 2007, which provides a mentoring service to vulnerable children and young people aged 8 - 13, and to disabled children and young people aged 8 - 18 in York. One-to-one mentoring sessions offer "islands of time and space" to the children to encourage development in confidence and self-esteem through recreational activities. It is a regular weekly reliable space to talk about feelings, difficulties and concerns. These mentoring sessions focus on positive relationships. Many of the children and young people referred to The Island have very limited recreational and developmental opportunities; therefore spending quality time with an affirmative adult role model over the course of a year has proven to make a real difference in their lives!

How this cause brings people in the community together

The Island is a project within the community, with vulnerable children and young people from within the community with volunteer mentors from within the community - hence a project for the community facilitated by the community. By engaging vulnerable children and young people in positive community activities they shall continue to do so beyond the period of mentoring.
