About this cause

We are the village hall for Ponteland. The hall was funded by public subscription and fund raising and was built to commemorate those local men who lost their lives in World War 1. The hall opened in 1922 with the aim of 'providing facilities for recreation and other leisure time occupation in the interests of social welfare with the objective of improving the conditions of life for the persons for whom they are intended.' The hall caters for a wide range of users from all age groups including mother and baby sessions, art and craft groups, yoga, bridge, WI, maths and literacy classes for children, and sessions for the retired. Most of these sessions help to promote volunteering and individual user groups also raise funds for charitable purposes.

How this cause brings people in the community together

The full proposal, which will be managed by the hall trustees, will renew the wiring and light fittings, replace the ceiling and fit a new floor covering in the upstairs meeting room. The room has chairlift access for those with mobility problems and benefits from an adjacent kitchen and toilet provision. It is therefore self contained and requires the improvements listed above to complete the full refurbishment. Lack of funds has restricted our ability to undertake this final part of the work although we have been fortunate in being awarded a grant under your Round 1 programme. This grant will be used to replace the floor covering. The current application, if successful, would be used towards the replacement of the ceiling, lighting and wiring.
