About this cause

Bright Red aims to improve the lives and treatment of people with blood cancer across the north of England. Through care, research and education we are striving to beat illnesses such as leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma myelodysplasia and myeloproliferative diseases. Over the years we have invested over £5m helping improve patient care, developing nurses and pushing the boundaries of blood cancer research. Bright Red has played a major role in helping Newcastle city region become one of the best places to be for those unfortunate enough to be diagnosed with a blood cancer. There is a whole host of things we still need to do to not only help patients battling the disease now, but also contribute to the ultimate goal of finding the cure.

How this cause brings people in the community together

We would like to raise funds to employ our second outreach nurse. As the demand on haematology units across the region grows there is an increased need for outreach care. Blood cancer patients are monitored regularly. This can often mean repeated trips to hospital for simple procedures (eg blood tests). Some of these tests could be conducted in the patients home. An outreach facility reduces travel time, stress and expense for the patient receiving the visit. It also has a positive knock on effect for patients attending clinics. We currently support an Outreach Nurse in the NCCC, funding a full time post for 5 years. In the time our nurse has been doing the job we can see a real need to provide more services like this, not only in Newcastle but all across the region.
