About this cause

The Friends of Ropner Park (FoRP) work with Stockton Borough Council to enhance experiences for any persons visiting the park. Our main activity is to raise funds to stage band concerts on the bandstand every Sunday for nearly three months every summer. We do this by organising three community events (fairs) in Spring, Autumn and at Christmas. the money raised pays for all the bands. We have also bought more benches which are now placed round the bandstand. This year we are continuing our ambitious project to create a sculpture trail round the lake for local nursery and school children, youth groups, the elderly and for future generations of visitors to the park to learn about and enjoy the wildlife above, on the lake and below the water.

How this cause brings people in the community together

In creating a sculpture trail round the lake we are hoping to involve the local RSPB in identifying which birds are regular and occasional visitors to our lakeside environment, including the island and the water itself. Other wildlife living in the undergrowth will also be identified. Local anglers have already given us feedback on the variety of fish inhabiting the lake. Once we have decided on the creatures to be sculpted, our artist will first sketch, then carve appropriate images to be included in the trail. We think this ongoing project will benefit the whole community in terms of increasing knowledge and understanding of wildlife in the park and enhancing the immediate environment. An added factor is the aesthetic pleasure to be gained from the three dimensional art work.
